I’ve been using HUGO for this site for a year now. That’s longer than the last two solutions I’ve used, combined, Wordpress and Blot.im. So, how’s that year been?
The Learning Curve
To say HUGO had a learning curve, would be an under statement. Coming from “We’ll take care of things for you” platforms, having to do almost everything myself was a shift. My decision not to use a premade theme, also didn’t help. Though I did learn a lot from that.
The templating in HUGO is weird. Kinda GO, and yet its own thing. Having some experience with Python, C, and Java helped a fair bit. I just how to learn the HUGO way. Thankfully HUGO is pretty much set and forget.
Today
I feel like my site is in a pretty good state. Tweaking the templates has gotten easier, and I’ve settled into a basic layout that I like.
The switch from writing posts in NOVA, to IA Writer has also helped. This lets me focus more on actually writing posts.
The Future
Because of the set and forget nature, I think I’ll be sticking with HUGO for a while. Though I might change my hosting provider. Don’t get me wrong, GitHub Pages has been great, and I still recommend it. But the idea of self hosting my site again, is starting to scratch at my brain. I’ll think about it.
