Going Sony

Photography

A few posts ago, I wrote about how I bought a camera… I bought another one.

Why?

The camera I originally picked up, was a Canon EOS Rebel T7. Don’t get me wrong, I like the thing. However, something I didn’t learn until after I got into the hobby is about the lens mount.

The main thing is, that Canon is pretty much done with the EF mount. Canon also never really let anyone make third party lens for the mount. Yeah, there are some third party lens out there for the mount, but they reversed engineered the mount’s communication protocol.

This didn’t sit well with me. Other mount systems have some cool cheap lenses available, but Canon being Canon won’t let that happen. So I bought a new camera.

The “New” Camera

After some searching (now knowing what to look for), I picked up a Sony A7II. Sony doesn’t care who makes lens for their cameras, just what I wanted.

I went with the A7II, mainly because It’s old. And thus, cheap.

Sony A7II

While the A7II is older than the T7, it was also never intended as a beginner camera. So using it for the first time was, confusing. It took a bit to learn how Sony does things.

I also picked up an adapter that lets me use my Canon EF lenses on it. It mostly works. Focusing has issues sometimes, so I’ll probably get E mount1 equivalents down the line. But it works for now.

The main difference between the T7 and the A7II, is the sensor size. Both are 24MP, but the Sony’s is larger2. This makes it better for low light photos. So I took some fun long exposure pics.

Should have I have done more research before buying the T7, yes. But sometimes you don’t know what to ask about a hobby, until you get into it.
