I made a pretty big decision a couple weeks ago. One that’s going to challenge me both in planing, and being able to adapt. And I want to write about it. Both to keeps readers updated, and for myself. I’m also going to try something with this post. Going over what’s hopefully going to go down over the next few months, and sprinkling in photos from my most recent zoo trips.
A New Job
I’ve been needing to get a new job for a while. My current one has been becoming more and more of a dead end. So I applied to a job in the U.S. Federal Government, that fits my interests, and qualifications. I’m not going to go into what it is, as that’s not important, the big thing is where it is.

The Last Frontier
Alaska. More specifically, Anchorage. That’s a pretty good distance from Washington DC. 4,200+ miles.

That’s a long drive. Like, really long. And half of it is in Canada.
Despite being in Alaska, Anchorage isn’t remote. Having more than one Walmart, a Target, and two, yes two Costcos. The agency I applied to had other, higher paying openings in Alaska. In areas without paved roads. Or a Costco… I’m good.

A Long Road Ahead
I still have a long road ahead with getting hired, I’m already though part of it, but the Federal Government is pretty slow.
That doesn’t mean I haven’t been getting ready. I finally applied for a passport, so I can drive through Canada1, and picked up my own Costco membership.
Am I excited, absolutely. Am I nervous, also absolutely. Alaska is a long way away, and working for the fed isn’t quite the same as a normal company. Luckily a lot of people have offered to help out. And most of my family work(ed) for the Federal Government, so they’ve been answering lot of question about leave, benefits, and more.
So fingers crossed for Alaska 🤞. Until then, here’s a video of one of the pandas at the National Zoo.

For how much I like to travel, I don’t know why it took me this long to apply for one. The last time I left the country was on a trip to Vancouver, before 9/11. Back when you didn’t need a passport. ↩︎
