Back in 2019, looking to hop away from Facebook, I came across mastodon. And after doing some research, I joined Fosstodon. I miss those days of Mastodon. Back when the post button said “Toot”, the web interface was more focused on your instance1, and the twitter users, were still on twitter.
Those days are long gone, and long dead.
That Was Then, This is Now
I left in May of 2024, during the drama of threads.net. I had had enough. This started as a small break, but turned to a full departure, deleting my account.
This morning I awoke to a surprising post in my RSS feed. Kev, one of the co-founders of Fosstodon, was stepping down. I knew Kev was getting tired of Mastodon. But the reason, was both surprising, and not surprising. Go give his post a read, as well as this one, I’m not going to rehash it here.
What I didn’t expect to see, was Mike, the other co-founder, was also stepping down.
Reflection
The fedi is supposed to be a friendly, welcoming online space, right? But the fact is, it isn’t.

When a friend of mine Luke, left Mastodon, I was a little shocked. But, not to long after, I followed. And went all in on my personal blog. There’s no drama here, no uptight users shouting, just me. This is my website, on my (rented) server. I think the web should go back the the blogging days of old.
What will happen to Fosstodon, remains to be seen. But at least for me, the Mastodon network as a whole, is just like the animal. Dead.
P.S. To the moderator who got caught up in this. I wish you the best of luck, where ever you end up. 🍺
