Year In Review

Personal

It’s the end of 2024, time to look back and see what happened.

Flights

In 2024, I did ten flights. Covering 11,285 miles, and spending just shy of 28 hours on a plane, while racking up only two hours of delays. The worst being IAD -> DEN, with 40min of sitting on the ramp.

The aircraft type I was on the most, was the B737-800, with four flights. Two of those were on the same plane, N8631A. I also sat in seat 22D twice, across two different aircraft. A fun challenge with free for all seating.

Flighty for macOS

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the amount of flying I got in this year. Though, this being me, I would have loved more.

The Blog

I’ve made a number of changes to this site over the past year. Adding features, removing things, redoing other things. The usual stuff.

I did switch web hosts, but you can read about that here.

Earlier this year, I set a goal of 100 posts. I didn’t quite hit that, but I came super close. 100 posts was a bit ambitious, so I think for next year I’ll shoot for 80.

Social Networking

Back in May, I left the last social network I used. Mastodon. It’s pretty safe to say that I don’t regret it.

One of the main issues I have with social networking, is short form content. It used to be “how can I squeeze my thoughts into 180 characters?”. That character limit has increased over the years, but the thought processes hasn’t. Moving from that to blogging was the opposite, “How do I make my thoughts fill a web page?”

I would be lying if I said I haven’t thought about going back. I have. I do miss the interactivity, posting quick pics of what I’m doing, or where I am. But, I don’t miss all the reasons I left. And those reasons are still keeping me from going back. To it, or anything similar.

Reading

I picked up a new ereader this year. And I’ve already gone through a few really good books on it.

Both were really good, though I think Recursion still takes the cake for me.

Photography

A few month back, I bought a camera. And now it’s pretty safe to say that I’ve gotten into photography.

Since that first purchase, I’ve changed camera systems, picked up more lenses, and sold my soul to Adobe for Lightroom Classic.

I also built a photos page. With fancy features like auto extracting EXIF data from the photos.

Work

As some of you might know, I have two jobs. What’s new is that won’t be for much longer. My second job as a cybersecurity TA is ending soon. As my department is being dissolved.

I still have my main job, and my second job really just provided fun money. But it was still handy to have. I’m not hurting, but I have added a “toss me a [food item]” button at the bottom of every post. The food item is randomly chosen from a list on site build.

I could do a whole post about how monetizing a hobby makes it not a hobby. To help stave off that hobby death effect, nothing will be locked behind a donation in any way. And, once I can replace that income, the link will go away.

2025

What will 2025 bring? I don’t know. There’s a few things I’m hoping for. But, there’s only one way to find out what we’ll get.
